Exodus 18:1-20:23(26) CJB Haftarah: Isaiah 6:1-13; 9:5-6  Brit Chadasha: Matthew 8:5-20
Shabbat February 11, 2012 -- Sh'vat 18 5772
"Now Yitro the priest of Midyan, Moshe's father-in-law, heard about all that God had done for Moshe and for Isra'el his people, how Adonai had brought Isra'el out of Egypt."

a beautiful picture and website I found

This is the Parshah we receive The 10 Foundations:
  1. You are to have no other gods before me.
  2. You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline.  You are not to bow down to them or serve the; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.
  3. You are not to use lightly the name of Adonai your God, because Adonai will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.
  4. Remember the day, Shabbat, to set it apart for God.  you have six days to labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Shabbat for Adonai your God.  On it, you are not to do any kind of work--not you, your son or your daughter, not your male or female slave, not your livestock and not the foreigner staying with you inside the gates to your property.  For in six days, Adonai made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested.  This is why Adonai blessed the day, Shabbat, and separated it for himself.
  5. honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your god is giving you.
  6. Do not murder
  7. do not commit adultery
  8. Do not steal
  9. Do not give false evidence against your neighbor.
  10. Do not covet your neighbor's house; do not covet your neighbors wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
      • Exodus 20:2-15(18) CJB
This is a beautiful Parshah, Adonai has carried us on eagle's wings and brought us out to Him.  He tells us to pay careful attention and keep His covenant, then we will be treasures from among all the peoples, "for all the earth is min; and you will be a kingdom of cohanim for me, a nation set apart."

The Haftarah is powerful, I love this scripture!
"They were crying out to each other, 'More holy than the holiest holiness is Adonai-Tzva'ot!  The whole earth is filled with his glory!'"       Isaiah 6:3 CJB
Adonai sends Isaiah out to tell the people, "Yes, you hear, but you don't understand.  You certainly see, but you don't get the point!" 6:9  This then takes us to Matthew 13 and Acts 28 when Yeshua is speaking with the talmidim.
I enjoy Isaiah 9:6-7, for it speaks of the King of Israel!
The word pele (wonderful) is used in Judges 13:18 in regards to the name of the Angel of the Lord to whom is identified in verse 22 as God.
Yoetz El Gibbor (Counsellor Mighty God) Holy One of Israel found in Isaiah 10 and Psalm 24.
Avi'ad (Father of Eternity) Avinu Malkenu Isaiah 63, 1 Chronicles 29, Psalm 69, Malachi 2
Sar Shalom (Prince of Peace)

The Brit Chadashah reading from Matthew promises the coming King of Judah as the Wonderful One, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, is the Son of David!  The One who is promised to inherit the kingdom, reveals that access to the kingdom is through faith!

  •  A Year Through the Torah--A week-by-week journey for Christians by John J Parsons   As an additional postscript to the Torah portion reading (Yitro), how grateful we should be that the Lord has provided us with a greater Mediator than Moshe to enter into the "thick darkness" where God is!  Yeshua the Mashiach is our High Priest of the better covenant, based on better promises (Hebrews 8:6).  By means of His sacrificial work we can now draw near to God without fear of His wrath.  The "third day" of Moshes at Mt Sinai meant death and fear for ancient Israel; but the third day of Yeshua at Moriah means life and love fora ll of Israel forevermore!
